Echoes of Yi: Samsara – A Brutally Beautiful Martial Arts Journey
Here’s the thing about this game that I absolutely thought would surprise me: Echoes of Yi: Samsara is not only another action game. It is definitely a love letter to Chinese martial arts, stolen in a dark and mysterious package, and yet I went in expecting to have cool fights only to find myself experiencing this very deep, almost poetic experience that sticks with you.

When Combat Feels Like a Deadly Dance
The fighting system? Man, it’s brutal but unbelievably rewarding. You can’t just mash buttons; every strike, block, and counter must have perfect timing. There were moments when I would be crushed by some boss like five times in a row, but when it finally clicked, and a flawless combo was pulled off? Best feeling ever.
What really got me was how they made offense and defense flow together. You’re not just waiting to attack – you’re reading the enemy, building up their stagger meter, then unleashing hell when they slip up. It’s like playing chess if every move could kill you.
More Than Just Pretty Fights
But here’s the thing that surprised me: there’s actually some plot involved. You’re not just some random warrior; you’re the Sword Saint’s first disciple, and the whole world’s counting on you. There is this ancient tree, the Jianmu at Sanxingdui, that ties it all together. The deeper I went, the more I realized how personal the stakes were.
The spirit world sections? Very trippy indeed, but in the best way possible. There are always things that cause reality to be questioned, and conspiracy after conspiracy will build up. I won’t spoil anything, but that tree isn’t just scenery, just saying.
Culture You Could Feel It
I was truly amazed by how genuine everything in this world felt. This isn’t some Asian inspired decoration. It’s got the tattoo of real Chinese traditions. The Sanxingdui ruins aren’t mere backgrounds; they are part of the story. The evidence of Peking opera influence could also be seen in how the characters moved and fought. The bosses are so legendary that they seem to have come out of drawn myths.
And, oh, the martial arts: Tai Chi, sword forms, spear techniques; they did not mocap some moves and called it a day. You could tell someone really studied this stuff. When you master a perfect counter, it looks and feels like real kung fu. You may also be interested in: Out of Sight Free (v1.0.39)
