Well, Hotel 188 isn’t the kind of horror game that has you pandered by monsters at every turn, so to speak. Nah, this one is a real psychological game that would linger on your mind. It is all about that eerie atmosphere, the silence, the echo of your footsteps, that feeling in the back of your mind that something is wrong, even when nothing’s happening. And I must say, it’s scarier in a way.

You wake up in a strange hotel that you have never seen before. Time stands still; rooms shift slightly when you aren’t looking; all you can do is move straight ahead, only that you have no idea where “straight ahead” leads to.
Soon, it grows to a point where one begins to question precisely whether they are lost in the hotel. Was that door always there? Did it just change? Always undermined by doubt and the slightest of questions, one enters that space, just like going deeper into the Backrooms, but on a personal level.
But that doesn’t mean you are just wandering about. There are puzzles, not really hard but not pure junk either. Pay attention, maybe you have to backtrack, and think. Just when you think you have everything figured out, the game throws something at you, a little moment that is just paralyzing.
It is as if every little detail from the buzz of a flickering light to a room strangely familiar is all planned out. It is as though the hotel is alive, and it is watching you, shifting around you. And the worst of all? You never know if it wants you to leave or keep you there forever.
Not for those looking for jump scares, Hotel 188 is most suited for those who want a slow, encoming dread that stops you in your tracks before you turn a corner.
